In woodworking, a rip-cut is a sort of lower that severs or divides a bit of wooden parallel to the grain. The other typical type of lower is a cross-lower, a lower perpendicular to the grain. Unlike cross-slicing, which shears the wooden fibers, a rip noticed works more like a sequence of chisels, lifting off small splinters of wooden. The nature of the wooden grain requires the form of the saw teeth to be completely different, thus the need for both rip saws and crosscut saws
